The Question to Ask Before Handing a Task to an AI Agent
After a week of unpacking AI agents, we can boil it all down to a single question, the most useful one an owner can ask before diving in. Here it is: would I hand this task to a new employee, on their very first day, with no supervision? If the answer is no, then it isn't yet a good task to hand to an agent — at least not alone, not right away.
This question works because an agent looks far more like an employee than like software, as we saw this week. And our intuition about employees is good, because we built it through experience. We know instinctively not to let a new hire sign contracts on day one, or talk to an important customer unprepared, or approve spending without a look. That same intuition, applied to agents, protects you from the mistakes Gartner sees coming: projects launched with no frame, no measure, no risk control.
It's also an excellent filter for sorting tasks. A task you'd hand without hesitation to a new employee — compiling figures, preparing a standard document, sorting requests by clear rules — is precisely the kind of bounded, repetitive, low-risk task that suits a first agent. A task you'd never hand over unsupervised — setting a price, handling a delicate complaint, committing the company — isn't ripe for autonomous automation, and saying so out loud spares you a project doomed to fail.
There's an important nuance, and it's encouraging. Answering no doesn't mean "never." It means "not without oversight." A new employee eventually earns your trust, and you gradually hand them more important things. An agent follows the same path: you start narrow, you supervise, you widen as results justify it. So the question isn't a wall, it's a compass. It tells you where to start and at what pace to move.
For an owner, that may be all you need to take from the year of agents. The technology is impressive, the vocabulary changes fast, the promises are big. But good judgment doesn't change: you delegate in proportion to the trust you've built, and you build that trust on measured results, not demonstrations. You already know how to do that with people. You just have to do it with agents.
