An SME's First AI Agent: How to Choose the Right Task

The question that stalls the most owners isn't "are AI agents worth it." It's "where do I start." And the answer lies in one precise choice: what will be the first task you hand to an agent. That choice matters more than the tool, because a good first task builds trust and proves value, while a bad one burns time and cools the team.

Four criteria are enough to spot a good candidate. First: the task is repetitive. If it comes back every day or every week in the same shape, the agent has something to practice on and you have something to measure a gain against. Second: it's bounded. You know where it starts, where it ends, and what a good result looks like. A task with fuzzy edges is unmanageable for an agent as much as for an employee.

Third criterion: the risk of an error is low or easy to recover from. For a first deployment, avoid anything that directly touches a customer's money or a legal obligation with no safety net. Prefer a task where an error shows, gets corrected, and has no irreversible consequence. That's how you learn to trust an agent: on ground where being wrong isn't costly. Fourth: the result is measurable. The time it used to take, the number of items handled, the error rate — a figure to compare the after against.

These criteria weed out the false good starts on their own. The prestigious but rare task doesn't lend itself to automation. The critical task with no room for error is too risky for a first try. The fuzzy task, the one you can't describe clearly, isn't ready. What remains, in almost every SME, are repetitive administrative tasks: preparing standard documents, sorting incoming requests, doing follow-ups, compiling data. Unglamorous, but ideal.

For an owner, the concrete exercise takes ten minutes. List the three tasks that come back most often in a week, run each through the four criteria, and keep the one that ticks all four boxes. You've got your first agent task — not the most spectacular, but the most likely to succeed. And a first success beats ten abandoned ambitions.

At Paquin & Co., we help Quebec SMEs choose that first task — the one that proves the value without putting the business on the line. paquinco.com
